Just like their name, the Italian combo is good at raising the temperature. And to do that, Volcano Heat doesn’t hesitate to tap into the directory of the Stooges (“Dead Leaves”), The White Stripes (“These Days”) and even Queens of the Stone Age (“Today”). “Vive le Rock!” is their debut album and follows two EPs released in 2008 and 2009 respectively. The excellent production improves the power of their songs, competing with the best of worldwide rock acts, despite an approach not very original but damn melodic and energetic!

With their first long player Volcano Heat set the bar high with a quick jolt of electricity through songs like the foot-stomping “These Days”, the rattling “Shake Your Head” and the blazing fuzz monster “Restless”. They even tackle a woolly version of Beatles classic “Come Together” and actually leave their own stamp on it using a thick bass riff and augmented vocals. Not the easiest thing to do as a three-piece but their confidence and production denotes a band that’s not easily intimidated.

The band’s press releases calls Vive Le Rock a “high-voltage, real deal rock experience!” Formed during the late summer of 2007, after two self-produced EPs and a live album, Volcano Heat reveal themselves as true fans of the late sixties-early seventies rock scene and sight bands like The Kinks, Black Sabbath and even the White Stripes as influences. Formed in 2007 by Luca Picchetti (guitar, vocals) and ex-Lola Rent bassist Silvano ‘Gene’ Zamarin, the duo quickly found drummer Andrea Vianello and the trio were plugged in and ready to go. There’s a slight hint of Scandi-rock through most of the records 11-tracks, certainly in “Dead Leaves” and “The Sky” as they pull from the Hellacopters and Gluecifer with layered guitars and a charging rhythm section. Other tracks are more subtle. “White Rays White Heat” fuse a sixties garage attack with a punkish start/stop bridge. The pacing is quick tempo-ed and full volume. The disc really heats up with “I Remember” as Picchetti does his best Jim Morrison growl through the verse before the band come in raging. The feedback in the last 30 seconds is worth the price of admission alone. Drummer Andrea Vianello gets his own chance to shine in the jarring Green Day-like “Today”, a track that’s not only catchy but has great melody. Production plays a big part in the record’s ability to literally leap forward and capture it’s listener. Nicely placed “Everything Is Right” quietly closes the disc as the only ballad. Soothing, soulful and artistic, its one and a half minutes holds the frayed ends just long enough to hit the repeat button.

“Vive Le Rock! Vive l’Italie!” Una piccola lode in tinta francese per introdurre i Made In Italy Volcano Heat e per la buona regola del 3, numero perfetto in ogni occasione, meglio non potevo cominciare per rendere doveroso omaggio al chitarrista e frontman Luca Picchetti, al bassista Gene e al batterista Andrea Vianello che dal 2007 suonano un rock puro, diretto, essenziale, e non solo. Inserendo la quinta sono riusciti a pubblicare due EP: “And The Light Goes Out” nel 2008 e il live “Surrender/Live At Blocco A” l’anno successivo. Toccando il 2011 la band ha cominciato a comporre i brani del presente e già citato debut album “Vive Le Rock!”, uscito per la Go Down Records, attraverso un rock arricchito di atmosfere garage per dare allo stesso un tocco di grezza eleganza, detto così può sembrare contraddittorio, ma vi assicuro che il trio di Mestre suona che è una bellezza omaggiando un ottimo mix tra Stooges, Kinks, White Stripes, Black Sabbath e un pizzico di scena punk newyorchese. Partenza in grinta style con l’opener “Dead Lives” battezzata altrettanto energicamente da Luca (voce che ricorda da vicino il leader dei Kinks), e impreziosita da un intermezzo strumentale incredibilmente Scorpions, mentre si vivono atmosfere di fine anni ‘70 con “Shake Your Head” ben supportate da un piacevole organo hammond e che si ripete, pur se in tono più leggero, nella successiva e scatenata “White Rays White Heat”.

Più procede il percorso del cd e più la band diventa sorprendente perché nella traccia “I Remember” echeggiano, tra una nota e l’altra, piccoli momenti Doors fino ad arrivare a un finale dove il giro di basso calza assolutamente a pennello. Niente male la cover beatlesiana “Come Together”, soprattutto l’ultima parte dove il frontman declama il titolo con decisa fermezza e senza risparmiarsi anche per le successive “These Days”, altra song coinvolgente e che lascia senza fiato, e l’arrembante “Today” accompagnata da un sound assai effervescente. Ancora Luca e a tutto tondo in “Restless” arricchita del suo riff a sei corde e dove si unisce anche l’ottimo basso di Gene per una song forte e allo stesso tempo di buon gusto, se poi vi piacciono i miti inossidabili rimarrete pienamente soddisfatti ascoltando “The Sky” in special modo i fedelissimi dei Black Sabbath; e adesso tutti a saltare sulle note di “Secrets”, impossibile resistere a un ritmo (permettetemi il gioco di parole), così saltellante e senza dimenticare un intermezzo in stile far west per la serie “di tutto, di più”.

Dopo dieci tracce di pura adrenalina l’album si chiude con la brevissima acoustic ballad “Everything Is Right”, a testimoniare che i Volcano Heat sanno unire cuore rock e anima soft perché la musica possa vivere un unico e autentico heartbeat/soul e, se il buongiorno si vede dal mattino, credo che al trio veneziano si aprirà presto un music world a tutta gondola!

Se per Neil Young il rock non morirà mai, per i Volcano Heat il rock va sempre incitato. Parole sacrosante (nel senso più laico del termine). Questo trio esordisce, entrando a gamba tesa nel mondo del rock, con un disco di ottimo rock.
Ottimo, perché senza nessuna pretesa e soprattutto divertendosi a suonare ciò che più a loro piace, i Volcano Heat si esprimono con il miglior rock ascoltato a cavallo del 2000, vale a dire tutto ciò che di buono si è ascoltato tra la seconda metà degli anni ’90 e i primi anni del 2000.

Il trio parte con il rock’n’roll tirato di “Dead leaves”, avendo nelle orecchie l’irruenza del Detroit sound, per poi allietarci con diversi pezzi vicini alle sonorità e all’attitudine dei White Sripes (“Shake Your head”, “These days”). Splendida la cover di “Come togheter” suonata come se lo facessero i Queens Of The Stone Age. Il brano più intrigante è sicuramente “White days white heat”, grazie alla capacità con la quale, omaggiando nel titolo i Velvet Underground, si esprimono in un irruento rock’n’roll che media tra i primi Strokes e gli Hives. Buon ascolto ragazzi e ricordate di “beatificare” sempre il rock’n’roll!!!

VIVE LE ROCK! ROCKTIMES REVIEW

Gli italiani possono sfoggiare il titolo il VIVE LE ROCK! Ancor di più se prendono come modelli gli Stooges, i Warrior Soul, la scena punk newyorchese e la parte oscura degli anni 80, registrando una versione di “Come Together” dei Beatles con chitarre tirate e un basso pompante veramente piacevoli all’ascolto; nulla è stravolto rispetto alla composizione di Lennon/ McCartney e molto ben piazzato si dimostra l’assolo di chitarra, davvero tagliente, di Luca Pichetti, cantante con una voce che ricorda il frontman dei Kinks, Ray Davies.

I Volcano Heat fanno uscire lava calda dalle casse con una velocità eruttiva che sprizza come una fontana dal mezzo del disco. La massa rosso fuoco delle 11 tracks è fluida e velenosa, con diverse belle melodie che sfruttano abilmente indovinati break ritmici per un ascolto facile e mai noioso. VIVE LE ROCK oscilla tra post punk e stoner, senza tuttavia rimanerne intrappolato e il trio riesce a accendere il battere del piede con groove molto belli e diretti con canzoni che raramente superano i tre minuti. Nell’ingranaggio non si trova neppure un granello di sabbia e il disco è molto ricco e vario; degno di lode che ogni singolo pezzo si nega con tutti i mezzi al riconoscimento di uno stile preciso e definito.

Nei suoi excursus nei campi musicali suddetti il trio è abile ad infrangere qualche volta il muro dei 4 minuti, come in “I Remember”, introdotta dalla voce effettata di Picchetti, che si apre a una progressione di classe, con pause e piccoli cambi di tempo molto efficaci, fino al bollente assolo di chitarra che chiude il brano e dove prende valore il basso melodico di Zamarin. Un martello, questo pezzo! “Secrets” è un altro pezzo da 4 minuti, rude e violento. I riff di chitarra volano verso le orecchie come saette per un pezzo ancora una volta che convince grazie ad una chitarra molto ispirata. Alla fine sembra che a manchi loro l’aria, visto che l’ultimo brano dura meno di un minuto e mezzo! In “Everything is Right” il trio si calma e lascia spazio a voce, chitarra e una ben calibrata tastiera che assomiglia a un carillon.

Insomma, VIVE LE ROCK! non manca l’obiettivo e i Volcano Heat, dopo un paio di EP e una registrazione live, fanno centro con un disco di qualità, mai banale, immediato e piacevole all’ascolto.
